BSET In Mechanical Engineering Technology :

The Mechanical Engineering Technology (MCT) Program prepares students for diverse and dynamic careers in industry. MCT graduates work in fields that require understanding of the relationships and dependencies among materials, product development, manufacturing systems and processes, or energy production, transformation and transmission (including alternative energy).  The program emphasizes hands-on laboratory experiences, and courses stress the practical application of mathematics, science, and engineering to solve real world problems. The MCT program provides students with a well-rounded education focused on the knowledge of existing and new developments in their technical specialty.

The BSET-MCT program offers students the opportunity to specialize in one of three specialty tracks namely: design, energy, or manufacturing.  Courses can be chosen from a variety of technical areas including:

  • Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics
  • Energy Conversion and Heat Transfer
  • Kinematics and Dynamics of Machines
  • Design of Machine Elements
  • Hybrid Vehicle Technology
  • Applied Vehicle Dynamics
  • Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing
  • Manufacturing Analysis and Processing Engineering

The MCT program is accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (TAC – ABET).

Educational Objectives:

The educational objectives of the Mechanical Engineering Technology (MCT) program at Wayne State University are to produce graduates who can:

Attain gainful employment and practice successfully in the mechanical and related engineering technology profession

Remain technically current and adapt to rapidly changing technologies through continuous learning and self-improvement

Demonstrate independent thinking and function effectively in team-orientated and open-ended activities in an industrial environment

Communicate effectively and perform ethically and professionally in business, industry, and society.

MCT Program Outcomes:

The Mechanical Engineering Technology Program has established the following program outcomes, which describe those competencies that our students should demonstrate by the time they graduate:

A firm foundation in mathematics and sciences required for the understanding, application, and development of mechanical engineering technology principles

Technical expertise in engineering materials, statics, dynamics, strength of materials, fluid power or fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and instrumentation electronics.

Technical expertise having added technical depth in manufacturing processes, mechanical design, and fluids and thermal sciences

An appropriate mastery of techniques, skills and modern tools for mechanical engineering technology.

The ability to communicate effectively in oral, written, visual, and graphical modes in both interpersonal and group environments

The attitudes, abilities, and skills required to adapt to rapidly changing technologies and the ability to pursue life-long learning

An understanding of all aspects of the design process and project management including functional and esthetic considerations

A well-developed sense of ethics, global issues, professional and social responsibility and a respect for diversity

The skills and attitudes necessary to work successfully as a member of a team
